We have streaming notification channel between server and client. We don't set keepalive timeout. Both server and client are running in the same host.

After that, the server process got into a state where it consumes a lot of CPU. The ps command shows a lot of new threads were created. We tried to reproduce the problem by setting the keepalive on the server side builder. We don't set the keepalive on the client. However, it doesn't send out the keepalive ping. Sign in to your account. It would be nice if there was consistent default timeout support be able to set a default timeout across the GRPC clients. Default timeouts are really useful and part of basically every networking-related library. One advantage in a production scenario would be not having to worry about people forgetting to set timeouts on individual requests and saturating client resources when the server's slow to respond or not responding.

It seems like support for default timeouts in GRPC is currently implementation-dependent, and supported in only the Ruby library and Go library?

Maybe it would be nice to build the functionality into core and expose it into the individual languages? That Ruby documentation link corresponds to a really old version of the library, and Ruby is currently consistent with other languages in having no finite timeout.

I think my original comment may have been confusing. I was not hoping that GRPC would have a default timeout. I was hoping that it would be possible for users to specify a default timeout either on the channel or on the client, in a consistent manner across languages. Edited the original comment. The forthcoming service config functionality which we plan to make available by the end of Q1 will provide a way for service owners to publish default timeouts on a per-method basis including setting a default for all methods of a given service.

That's not exactly the same thing as allowing the client to specify a default timeout for all RPCs, but I think it's actually a bit better suited to real-life use, since it's hard to imagine the same default timeout being appropriate for every single RPC. This post explains why we recommend being deliberate about setting deadlines, with useful code snippets to show you how. When you use gRPC, the gRPC library takes care of communication, marshalling, unmarshalling, and deadline enforcement.

By default this deadline is a very large number, dependent on the language implementation. How deadlines are specified is also language-dependent. Others use a timeouta duration of time after which the RPC times out. This puts the service at risk of running out of resources, like memory, which would increase the latency of the service, or could crash the entire process in the worst case. To avoid this, services should specify the longest default deadline they technically support, and clients should wait until the response is no longer useful to them.

For the service this can be as simple as providing a comment in the. For the client this involves setting useful deadlines. Your service might be as simple as the Greeter in our quick start guides, in which case ms would be fine.

Your service might be as complex as a globally-distributed and strongly consistent database. The deadline for a client query will be different from how long they should wait for you to drop their table. So what do you need to consider to make an informed choice of deadline?

Factors to take into account include the end to end latency of the whole system, which RPCs are serial, and which can be made in parallel. Engineers need to understand the service and then set a deliberate deadline for the RPCs between clients and servers. In gRPC, both the client and server make their own independent and local determination about whether the remote procedure call RPC was successful.
